Editorial Review
In Signs of Life Scott Hahn, provides us with a small jewel-case in which he displays and examines some traditional Catholic customs, ranging from the familiar Sign of the Cross to sacred images, relics, ... Drawing on his wide scriptural expertise , Hahn examines and reflects upon the deep biblical and historical roots of each custom. At the end of each chapter is a ‘Ponder’ section: quotations from spiritual writers, both ancient and modern, ranging from the Sacramentary of the St Serapion of Egypt (4th cent) to Dorothy Day and Mother Teresa. Hahn’s chapter on Bible Study, as might be expected, is particularly well worth reading. On a very topical note, he also writes about Advent. ‘Advent is a season we must recover, even if it takes a heroic effort . . . it’s difficult for us to experience the joy unless we first undergo the longing . . The apostles fasted to prepare for worship in the Lord’s presence. We should, too. That empty feeling should serve as a sensible sign of our spiritual need. It is good for us, at least once a year, to recall the pain and poverty of a world without Christ’] Every page a stopping-place for prayer.
